You are right -- I did have OSS compiled in.  It was the default on
the build.

I followed your steps, but the equalizer is still having no effect.
Also, the xmms volume slider does not affect the alsamixer display.
The equalizer slider changes _do_ show up in the scrolling text box of
the main xmms window.  (I'm experimenting while playing an audio CD.)

Alas, I get no audible change as I play with the equalizer.  I must be
missing something painfully obvious.  Any suggestions are welcome.
