One thing to check - I suspect xmms does something rather akin to WinAmp, which buffers a second or so of audio ahead of time. Hence when you change the equaliser settings, it'll take about a second for the change to happen, so drag a slider, then leave it for a second. (Also, are you sure that the equaliser is turned on?
