Hoho.. This is great! I've been using OSS cs4232 for maybe 3 years on this old machine. I never suspected it was something else :-) snd-cs4236 does load as it should. I get one error message though: CS4236+ isapnp configure failed for MPU (out of resources?) but all i've done so for is a modprobe and nothing more. I have not even tried it to see if it can play sound (I'll install some applications for that now, or load oss emulation or something). Thanks a lot.
