I've got the same problem as you but I've found a (albeit unsatisfactory) solution - don't use ALSA, use the drivers included in stock kernel (2.4.20 here). That way I've got output on the digital jack but if you want to play AC3 in passthrough mode you need the ALSA drivers. They work well using AC3 passthrough but the test with the kernel driver makes it absolutely clear rc7 contains at least one major bug. I hope that someone is able to find it, if there's need to run some tests to locate the problem - just tell me what, I'll run them.
