The woody debian package is using an older version of the alsa-drivers...
this is the version info given:

0.9+0beta12-3

I'll grab the CVS and install that instead before I start fiddling with
that function, although what you are saying does make sense... that
driver seems to have changed substantially in the newer versions.

For the record, /proc/interrupts, and I'm using 2.4.18 with no low latency
patch and I'm not using a sound server:
