I've recently done some updates on my Debian Sid system with handbuilt kernel. ALSA drivers 0.9.0rc6->0.9.5, kernel 2.4.20->2.4.21, and libasound now updated to 0.9.4-2.
K7S5A onboard audio had been working fine with driver 0.9.0rc6, though one of the k ernel modules did seggy when unloading. Now, with driver 0.9.5 loads and unloads without error. But I can't play any sound. For example, mplayer says: Checking audio filter chain for 44100Hz/2ch/16bit -> 44100Hz/2ch/16bit... AF_pre: af format: 2 bps, 2 ch, 44100 hz, little endian signed int AF_pre: 44100Hz 2ch Signed 16-bit (Little-Endian) audio_setup: Failed to set audio device to 2 channels Could not open/initialize audio device -> no sound. And zinf using the OSS plugin gives a dialog saying: Cannot determing (sic) the playback formats supported by the sound card. and using the ALSA plugin gives a dialog saying: Audio device is busy. Please make sure that another program is not using the device. while printing ALSA lib pcm_hw.c:1142:(_snd_pcm_hw_open) Invalid value for card on stdout/stderr. I've tried the driver modules 0.9.4, 0.9.1 and 0.9.0rc6 without success. mplayer seggies, and there's a kernal fault as well. So 0.9.5 drivers, which don't fault, seem an improvement and not the cause of the problem.
