You can try using the driver from www.opensound.com (for intel ich4) this worked gor me but u will get a trial version and after that if u want it you have to pay. Now I am having same problems my sound card works with the driver from open sound but not with alsa, perhaps thre is a way to take settings done by open sound drivers and compile them in the kernel (something like that).
