Ah, I see.  I can still play to analog out, just not to digital out (I
don't have anything hooked up to digital out, so I'd never notice).

No, I just used 'spdif_cap', I'll remake the changes to ~/.asoundrc
and try again with 'plug:spdif_cap'.

Also, I'm getting the feeling there are some basic concepts I'm
missing here; will poke around some more.  Thanks again for your
timely response.
