In XMMS, it shows 2 devices with the ALSA output plugin. If I select the second one 
with mmap off, and with the .asoundrc of:

pcm.via82xx {
 type hw
 card 0
 device 1
}

ctl.via82xx {
 type hw
 card 0
}

I get no static. Is there a way to set all other applications to use the same device 
XMMS is using?
