how about:
"try -ao alsa9 -abs [1234]. 1 through 4 sets different buffer/periodsizes." (don't know where I found this, maybe in the manpages or some mailing list).
I don't use SPDIF output, but get the same error for the analog outputs of my cs46xx-based xfire.
The following command works for me for 4channel analog out:
mplayer -ao alsa9:surround40 -abs 1 -channels 4
