Hi there list.

Im new so be gentle..:-)

I'm trying to get my sound chip AD1985 on a Asus P4C800 dlx fully working.
Does anyone have this setup?

The thing is that it works "ish"..but it seems unstable:

Can't play multiple audio steams simultanously, audio apps even seem to crash
very easily, due to some kind of blocking?

If I have XMMS playing (using Alsa), and try and start Kaffeine, it wont
start: "Can't init audio driver (Alsa)"

If I run movie with Kaffeine, and later try to start XMMS, (all using Alsa),
XMMS will bomb (freeze)

I also noticed that if I use the video player Kaffeine 0.4, using Alsa *.vob
files and DVD-movies with Alsa, audio is only hi loud "bscchh" noise. If pick
OSS it will play audio correctly however, still other media files do alwasy
work though, perhaps related to A/52 type audio encoded material?

At times I've also noticed that if I kill 'artd' that can also help in getting
mulimedia working. Or also using OSS for sound, but it seems a bit legacy and
not the "right way" to do it moving forward.. But in any case multiple audio/
video streams never work and its quite easy to crash.

I grabbed newer Alsa 0.9.8 rpm from a site called Packman to see if that might
help but I can't notice any benefit. I may be confused with what parts are
core modules, user layers, and one audio system vs another...

If anyone has some suggestions or ideas, I'd be happy to hear about it.
After looking at the alsa web site I have to admit that I was overwelmed..did
not really grip it all.
