I have a Gateway computer that came with an unusual SB PCI 128 sound
card (Ensoniq 1371) that has digital output only. There is no sound
unless the driver enables the digital output. When I first got this
computer I had to use the ALSA sound driver since it was the only one
that gave me a way to do this. Later, the OSS driver also supported it
through a command line option and I went back to OSS. Now I have
switched to SUSE Linux 9.0 and I seem to have ALSA drivers again. The
problem is I can't figure out how to enable the SPDIF output under Alsa.
I tried alsactl -h and looked in asound.state, but there is nothing
about SPDIF. I have alsa 0.9.6-66.
