I was led to a solution to this from an off-list assist from Brett 
Holcomb. He said to check the mixer and after trying clicking on various 
things in alsamixergui, I finally found the thing that works: Click the 
very top of the blank slider marked "IEC958 1". Had to scroll right for 
it to appear.
