I am using alsa 1.0.0rc2 and as far as I remember, I couldn't get xmms to work with arts output plugin, when arts is hooked to alsa using 48kHz. When I leave arts at default, xmms plays, but sound stutters/garbels (I think someone already reported this). I wonder whether it is a problem of alsa or the xmms-arts plugin. I want to play 44.1kHz stuff, btw.
Using arts with mplayer works fine though. Using alsa with mplayer causes too fast playback with 44.1 kHz stuff. Xine with arts causes very distorted output with that mp3 in 44.1kHz but sounds fine with 48Khz when watching dvb.
