I apoligize if my blunt remarks have caused anyone offense. This was not my
intention.

I would like to correct one misunderstanding regarding my frustration however.
I am not a win32 user dipping my toe in the waters on linux. I am a system
administrator accustomed to running apache, qmail, courier, bind, postgres,
mysql etc. Mostly I work with BSD variants.

Compared to mature products like those with which I ordinarily work, alsa is
an impenetrable thicket of trouble with few guideposts.

It simply would not do to say that linux is currently overhauling its web
services so at this point in time it is nearly impossible to get a web
server running with any certaintly unless you're willing to invests weeks of
effort. Same for mail or X. Or anything really.

I use BSD ( or in a pinch Linux ) for the above mentioned tasks because these
platforms offer the most powerful combination of features performance and
stability available. With sound, this simply isn't the case. At this stage in
the game, if I were to recommend to a client that they use Linux as a
platform for serious audio work, I would be giving poor advice.

I was reluctant to mix music with computers because music is how I relax
whereas computers are what stresses me out. I chose to dabble in Linux ( as
compared to BSD ) simply because most of the open source audio apps seem to
assume Linux rather than BSD, and many fail to readily compile on BSD. (For
instance, the FreeBSD ports tree still uses Rosegarden 2 of which the
program's own authors give a rather dismal review at this time. Rosegarden 4
would not willingly compile on my FreeBSD-4.6 setup for want of certain
libraries. I am about to upgrade this to 5.2 as soon as the download
finishes. )

After having a go at alsa I can see that my initial misgivings were not
without reason.

btw, I would not be at all averse to helping out with the reprehensible state
of documentation for alsa.
