Probably your machine is listed in the quirk table in snd-intel8x0. 
Please show the part of the "lspci -v" output for the audio controller
(the subsystem ID is important).

Also you can try the attached patch to alsa-drivers.  Apply with
"patch -p1", recompile and load snd-intel8x0 with ac97_quirk=0 (this
will override the quirk table in the driver).  Probably it will work
with the normal Master mixer control.
