Last night I decided to upgrade my kernel since there were numerous patches between my stock RH9 kernel, and the latest available to me, which was 2.4.20-30.9. Anyway, this seemed to be the perfect opportunity to upgrade my ALSA software from 0.9.8 to 1.0.2. Unfortunately, things didn't play nicely. After upgrading everything I immediately noticed very high CPU usage...top showed it to be artsd. Every time any sound would play, artsd would go to 90%+ CPU usage, and stay there for about a minute after the sound played, and then it would drop off to nothing.
I dropped back to the 0.9.8 ALSA drivers (still on the updated kernel), and CPU usage is "normal" again. I don't know if this problem is the driver's fault, or artsd's. I thought this would be a good place to start though.
BTW...the hardware is VIA 82c686 on an ASUS motherboard. Running RH9, KDE 3.1, arts 1.1.
Matt
