That's just sorta religious - I (as most Gentoo users) roll my own
kernel and try to optimize it so all stuff I don't need is left out and
everything I know that I need all the time (like soundcard drivers) I
compile directly into the kernel. Only stuff like floppy support that I
hardly ever use I might compile in as modules.
I don't see the idea of making alsa-stuff into modules when I want alsa
support on every single bootup :)

I have tried just completely normal "aplay
/usr/kde/3.2/share/sounds/pop.wav" which gives me sound through the
normal analog out, but no sound through optical. I just now tried it
with -D spdif and it does this:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] drzero $ aplay -D spdif /usr/kde/3.2/share/sounds/pop.wav
Playing WAVE '/usr/kde/3.2/share/sounds/pop.wav' : Signed 16 bit Little
Endian, Rate 44100 Hz, Mono
aplay: set_params:827: Sample format non available

Also I have tried through arts (which has been setup to use alsa) and it
works through analog, but not optical.

I don't know all that much about alsa/soundcards, so I don't really know
what else to do now.
