I have been following this mailing list for a while, and I've seen
quite a few problems with the i8x0 chipset (ac97) but I have not seen
any solutions (besides a few angry people switching to OSS, e.g.
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/archive/1/2002/03/1/10289). Let
me explain whats been going on.
I have an Intel (i8x0) chip and what happens is half the time I get
chipmunk sound (a low sample rate is being pushed through a high one,
or something like that) and the other half I get really low pitch, slow
sound (the opposite)
I'm trying to get MythTV to work, and the strange part is MythTV works
fine, all the time, no problems whatsoever with sound. It has the right
pitch and no problems. This is for the live-tv section and the
recorded-programs section. However, MythMusic (a music database
application) responds in the same fashion as I am about to describe
mpg123
However, when I first boot my computer, mpg123 (output rate at 44100)
and artsd (kde's sound server, which is set to use Threaded OSS) sounds
really high pitched and chipmunk like.
If I force mpg123 to use a higher sample rate than 44100, (mpg123 -r
48000) it doesn't sound as chipmunk-y, but it still sounds too high
pitched and fast.
If I wait for MythTV to start recording something (It records sound
using line in on /dev/dsp), trying mpg123 again creates the result of
very low pitched sound. If I force mpg123 to use a sample rate of 32000
instead of 44100, then the music sounds normal.
Any ideas of what is going on? I guess I'm a little new to all this
sound stuff, so if I failed to include something, I would be happy to
add.
Thanks.

I'm using the latest debian source package of Alsa 1.0.2c-3 and
Debian's precompiled kernel 2.6.3-1-686.

I've noticed you usually request this, so
