For some reason the boot parameters for knoppix are generally called
cheat codes.

Knoppix is a live CD that also can be installed to HD. So I guess he
booted the live version and then started the HD installer.

Knoppix is based on Debian stable. But several packages from testing and
unstable have been added to yield a more modern system. A HD
installation of Knoppix can often lead to problems (because of the
package mix) when doing apt-get installs/upgrades.
