Hmm, after another reboot, things seem to work (alsa 1.0.3, kernel 2.6.4) for a bit.
arecord -f S32_LE -r 48000 -c 2 file.wav
(also other rates like 96000)
records just fine, but crashes after a while. S16_LE/44100 and S32_LE lock or crash (with stack trace) almost immediately. S32_LE/48k and S32_LE/96k seem stable (at least for the 20-30 seconds I recorded)

I'll post this on mantis. Feel free to email me back to try fixes.

Whenever I try to record using something like "arecord -f CD file.wav" the system freezes almost immediately. This is with alsa 1.0.2 (1.0.2c drivers) and kernel 2.6.4 on Slackware 9.1. If I try arecord -f S32_LE -r 44100 -c 2 -t wav file.wav, it seems to wait about a second, then locks up. It writes the wav header, but nothing else is there after a reboot. Has anyone else observed this behaviour?

This has proven to be a good system to be running ext3 on with all these crashes...
