I tried alsamixer without success. It shows the same settings as the other mixers. As an experiment I used modconf to load the OSS modules i810_audio, ac97_codec, and snd-mixer-oss. Now I can play audio CDs again, so I know the internal cable is correct. I switched KDE to explicitly use OSS. I no longer get error messages from KDE, but I also don't get system sounds. If I run Noatun it hangs until I kill it. ogg123 reports "cannot open device oss". Now more than ever I suspect that I need to remove some other OSS module besides i810_audio, ac97_codec, and snd-mixer-oss.
