First thing to do is to run the command
alsamixer
which gives you a command based mixer. By default all mixer sliders are at
minimum and muted. You want to use the left right arrows to go to the
approp0riate place, use M to mute/unmute that channel ( eg PCM and Master)
and up arrows to push the sliders upi to get some volume.
That of course may not be your trouble, but it is the first thing to check.
