Hi!

On some mixers if only left channel is plugged signal will be fed to both channels. Try to plub something to input 2 too and listen if input 1 is still fed to both channels.

Well, after a LOT of mostly ALSA-unrelated tinkering, I finally have my
M-Audio Mobilepre USB set up.

For the unfamilar:

BUT, it's still not quite right. The first microphone is stereo. (Channel
1) is stereo, I can hear it in both ears when listening to the monitor
headphones. Channel 2, however, is mono! I can only hear it in my right
ear. amixer spits out the following:

$ amixer -c 1
Simple mixer control 'PCM',0
Capabilities: pvolume cvolume pswitch pswitch-joined cswitch cswitch-joined
Playback channels: Front Left - Front Right
Capture channels: Front Left - Front Right
 Limits: Playback 0 - 31 Capture 0 - 31
Front Left: Playback 29 [94%] [on] Capture 29 [94%] [on]
Front Right: Playback 29 [94%] [on] Capture 29 [94%] [on]
Simple mixer control 'PCM',1
 Capabilities: volume volume-joined
 Playback channels: Mono
 Capture channels: Mono
 Limits: 0 - 1
 Mono: 1 [100%]
Simple mixer control 'Speaker',0
 Capabilities: pvolume pswitch pswitch-joined
Playback channels: Front Left - Front Right
 Limits: Playback 0 - 31
 Mono:
Front Left: Playback 30 [97%] [on]
Front Right: Playback 30 [97%] [on]
Simple mixer control 'Speaker',1
 Capabilities: pvolume pswitch pswitch-joined
Playback channels: Front Left - Front Right
 Limits: Playback 0 - 31
 Mono:
Front Left: Playback 29 [94%] [on]
Front Right: Playback 29 [94%] [on]

I think that PCM,1 is supposed to be the second microphone input channel,
which makes sense because it's listed as Mono. So it's definitely a
settings/driver problem rather than hardware like a loose connection or
something.

So my question is two fold:

1) Any idea what is going on here? Why is it mono?

2) More importantly, is there any way I can change it to be stereo like
the other microphone?

Any ideas, suggestions, whatever would be greatly appreciated. I'm not
sure what else to do at this point. I really need some help.

Thanks,
Josh
