Success! I managed to install it without a hitch on 2.6.27-7-generic kernel,
though I also followed the step posted here

but not sure if that played a part as it didn't make any difference in the
other kernel version. So does that mean there is a problem with the
2.6.27-9-generic kernel? Maybe I messed something up trying to compile ALSA
from the latest build... Next step I'll reinstall the 2.6.27-9-generic kernel
and try the driver install again from scratch.
