In my own experience, in actual use on a flight line, the RSSI is bouncing around enough to make it obvious that data is flowing. If you have a test setup where RSSI gets stable enough to no longer be a good activity indicator, I think I'm jealous! ;-) Good point, though, a 'time since last received packet' sort of thing makes sense to me, and/or a blinking spot.
