Yes, we use them regularly.

No, if it's not straight, it won't work nearly as well.

Yes. If the bulkhead is non-conductive, this is what I generally do. On
'fancy' airframes, I even take a piece of acrylic tubing and make a nice
little cavity for the antenna forward of the bulkhead.

Right, hence the acrylic tubing.

On smaller airframes (38mm), we've done this too -- just run the whole
length of the antenna through the forward bulkhead and then carefully
pack the bay so that the antenna is reasonably straight.

Yup. I get clear acrylic tubing from TAP plastics around here.
