Oh o.k..... I assumed you started it up (like I do) in horiz. mode and then
issued a reboot to get into pad mode for flight. <- It's the most safe way
to handle things, as you can put the altimeter into flight mode (which
effectively enables the pyro charges) while being at a safe distance. It
truly is a nifty deal when compared to other altimeters. (And yes, I
*still* remember a charge going off next to my head with another brand of
altimeter. Fortunately my eyes were looking down when this happened.)
