RDF can be fun, or it can be really annoying .. I have to admit it's been a while since I did any myself. Having said that, I've successfully done RDF with a 3-element. Honestly, the biggest thing you need for doing RDF is an RF attenuator (in the radio or external) so that when you get close you can knock the signal down enough to not have full quieting in all directions. We've done things like putting on a rubber duck and using the body of the HT as a "blocker" to look for the deepest null... even taking the antenna entirely off and using just an open SMA connector on the end of the HT to "sniff out" which direction a strong signal is coming from. Hope that helps! Bdale
