That sounds just like the way my Windows 10 all in one works most of the time.  
Check file manager, the usb device may be there.

That means that Windows isn't seeing it. Have you tried a different USB
cable?

Did you get a 'new device discovered' beep from the laptop?

No, you don't need (or want) e-matches connected while connected to your
laptop.
