Well, this did indeed solve the problem. I was running tar version
1.13 which was giving me the error I reported of only backing up
directories. I've now replaced this with version 1.13.17 which seems
to have corrected the problem though I have noted that the amount of
data backed up as reported by Amanda, though very close in size, is
consistently a bit less than what 'du -sk' reports. This is a bit
disturbing. One always wants to see the backup image, if not be exact,
be at least a bit larger in size than the source image. Can anyone
offer an explanation for this, ie. should I be concerned?

Hmmm. Not sure what to say on this. Minus the possibly neglible
difference in backup vs. image size, it obviously isn't backing up
only directories anymore.
