Hello,
one day I got the message from AMANDA that a part of the images went to
the holding disk but I was just lazy so I did not flush them. The next
AMANDA run followed with no apparent problems and the next...and the
next, the images still awaiting on the holding disk.
Then one day I noticed that 3 of my filesystems were always being backup
up on level 1 and this level 1 was 50-90% the size of level 0! I forced
a full level for all three. By that time, I had almost forgotten the
images that waited to be flushed to tape. Due to the fact that those big
level 1s took a large portion of the tape, AMANDA could not do as many
level 0s as it should be able to under normal conditions, so I started
getting messages that filesystems were overdue for 5,6,7 days, with a
dumpcycle of 9!
After the forced level 0 backups were done, AMANDA proceeded to do a
level 1 the next day - and these level 1 images were still as large as
previously! I must say that these filesystems change very very little
every day and the problem with the huge level 1s the first time was
probably due to the change of clock from summer to winter time (this is
a dual boot system and the clock was changed by Windows, the affected
filesystems are also Windows partitions, mounted under linux as vfat
filesystems, no SAMBA for them, and reside on the tape server).
It was then that I remembered the images to be flushed. I flushed them -
and I saw that at least 2 of the three problematic filesystems were also
on those images with level 1 backups (but this is rather expected).
The question is: Shall I always amflush as soon as possible, meaning
*before* AMANDA's next run? Do I otherwise risk to bring AMANDA out of
sync with the level computations? Or was it probably a problem with my
fiddling with the real time clock, GMT or not, summer or winter time and
all this stuff? (I've installed chrony now, this should end my
headaches). I use amanda version 2.4.1p1 with GNU tar 1.12.
