I know you said you checked the modes on the Amanda binaries, but you
didn't post what they were, so please make sure they look like this:

Your group ownership may be different, but should be consistent as above.
These Amanda programs (no more, no less) **must** be owned by root and
have the setuid bit turned on (rws). The server is the one of interest
for this particular problem, not the client (although I think you said
those were the same machine in your case).
