That or you got a tape error (hardware, media, whatever).  Here are

So you had written a little under 10 GBytes, which, according to your
tapetype, is about 1/4 of the tape length.

The estimated size of sda10 is a little over 10 GBytes, i.e. roughly
double what you had already written.

What type of tapes are you using (I forget -- sorry)?  And how big do
you think they are (from tapetype)?

Taper should have logged more information.  What are the last 30 lines
of the matching amdump.<NN> file?
