You have guessed very well, this is a problem that has to do with the
very nature of masquerading (changing the ports).
I don't know if there is a solution to this (I think the answer is
rather "no"), but I do know that this has been discussed in this list
quite a few times, so please do a search in the archives using the
keywords "NAT", "firewall" and "masquerading", alone or in combinations.
I am sure you will find something.
