Huh? Are you saying amdump reports the above error but amcheck is happy?
Did you run amcheck as the Amanda user (operator?)?

I assume /usr/local/amanda is the home directory for user "operator"?

That's probably left over from the previous user you were running it as.
Just remove /tmp/amanda and let the next run (or amcheck) recreate it.
