Are you sure /home/amanda is the home directory for "amanda"?
Is the file owned by "amanda"? Is it mode 0600 or 0400?

This is the line that matters on the server. Are you sure you spelled
the hostname right? And that you did not abbreviate it?
If this doesn't help, go to your common-src directory and "make security".
Run ./security as "amanda". For "Remote user:" enter "root". For "Remote
host:" enter "client.example.org", then see what it has to say.
