amlabel failing

Running 'amlabel foo foo001' from amanda 2.4.2p1:

rewinding, reading label, reading label: Invalid argument
rewinding, writing label foo001
amlabel: writing label: Invalid argument

I'm at a loss here as I can access the drive with system tools, even
doing a manual tar dump as the amanda user works. Searching the
mailinglist archive didn't give any clues either, so I'd appreciate all
the help I can get.
