OK, so that takes Amanda completely out of the picture and gives you a
simple test case.
My first guess would be that you have a hardware blocking factor set
that is not compatible with 32 KBytes (although I can't think what that
would be). You might try several power of two block sizes with dd and
see if there is any pattern. Rewind the tape before each test.
Next guess would be either a hardware configuration problem (e.g. DIP
switches on the drive or software flags, however Irix does that) or an
actual hardware problem, either in the drive or the controller or the
cable or the air conditioner or the color of the walls ... :-)
'fraid I wouldn't know where to go from there since I don't have any
Irix experience. Time to make some new Irix friends :-).
