Type "/path/to/gnu/tar --version" and make sure it is at least 1.13.17.
Do **not** use anything earlier than that.

As Ben said, just make sure it is in your PATH when you run ./configure
for the client build, or use --with-gnutar=</path/to/gnu/tar>.
If you're re-running ./configure from a previous build, make sure you
do a "make distclean" first.
