It looks like you're getting some sort of network congestion. I had a problem
on a RedHat box with both kernel 2.2.18 and 2.4.2.
If the load on the server box got too high I'd lose connectivity. Buying a
seperate IDE card (rather than using the one on the motherboard) fixed a lot
of problems for me.
