Ummm, how about not changing it at all?  :-)

As to making sure it does not crash, you'll have to ask your OS folks
(and/or read the OS documentation) about what the limits are on shared
memory segments.  My guess is it's a system tunable.

To help in the future, I've added a TODO item to have Amanda deal with
allocation errors by starting with the tapebufs value and then shrinking
it until it works.

As to a good value for tapebufs, I'd suggest you try something simple
first, like doubling it from the default of 20 to 40.  That shouldn't
cause any memory problems.  Then see if it buys you anything before
cranking it way up.

I'm sure changing the value will help on some systems.  But on the two
I've tried, it made no difference on one and actually hurt on the other.
Just something to consider.
