Well, I've made a little progress with my problem of getting
Amanda to work with my Seagate STT20000A. For those who were
following, Amlabel would go through the motions of labeling a new
tape on this IDE ATAPI drive (using /dev/nht0) then error out and
insist that /dev/nht0 was not a non-rewinding device. Other tools
such as BRU and Tar seem perfectly happy with the non-rewinding
feature of this device but amlabel remained unconvinced.
Last night I re-compiled my kernel to include IDE-SCSI
emulation and set the tape drive to use this. With the drive now on
/dev/st0 (rewind) and /dev/nst0 (non-rewind) I tried Amlabel again
with a tapedev of /dev/nst0. Lo and Behold...it worked! However,
in the process of working, it spit out this error to STDERR:
st0: Error with sense data: [valid=0] Info fld=0x0, Current st09:00: sns = 70
5
ASC=20 ASCQ= 0
Raw sense data:0x70 0x00 0x05 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x0a 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00
0x20 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00
The tape was properly labeled (I checked using dd) and the tapelist
was updated. However, I'm not one to trust a tape backup that spews error
messages while it's working.....can anyone identify what the above error could
mean or perhaps come up with an explanation as to why Amanda doesn't seem
to like using my drive with native ATAPI support?
