You're asking the wrong people.  Tar getting a segmentation violation
(signal 11) is a tar issue.  You need to ask them.

If it really dropped core, it's probably in the top level of the directory
it was backing up.  You could start by running a debugger on that and
get a stack traceback to send to the GNU tar folks.

Someone else was having a gtar core dump problem today and I'll pass
along what I told them:

  * Try at least 1.13.19 from alpha.gnu.org.

  * If you use gcc to compile, make sure it's 2.95.3.  Previous
    versions had problems building gtar.

  * If nothing else works, you might go back to 1.12 with the Amanda
    patches from www.amanda.org.
