Hi,

we just received our new tape drive and are having the same problems as
with the old one. which is that I'm able to use tar to write stuff out
to the drive but it fails reading some of the files back. mainly if I
gzip it!

after reading through the Amanda archives I came across suggestions to
try dd a small file to the drive and reading it back, which does not
work, so I think my problem is possibly to do with block sizes. I have
the block size set to 0, which as far as I know is Variable. With this
block size I am able to write the small file to the drive but not read
it back. I have tried other block sizes like 512 and 32768 which both
fail trying to write to the drive. although if I use tar I am able to
write and read small amounts successfully to the drive.

so I'm not really sure where I stand, I think using a block size of 0 is
the right thing, but other than that I'm not really sure. I'm still
playing around with writing out larger amounts using tar and different
block sizes, but I think if its not working with dd then something is
still wrong.

is anyone able to point me in the right direction.
