[jlb@chaos jlb]$ sudo du -sk /usr/local/adm/amanda/DailySet1/index/
116000  /usr/local/adm/amanda/DailySet1/index

So, 100MB of index files for 56 disklist entries spread over about 25 
clients.  It takes minimal more time (if any), and no extra tape usage.
