you've successfully defeated a lot of Amanda's "idiot-proofing" and
internal housekeeping features :-(

The software labels should prevent writing to the wrong tape. The
internal data base content is tied to the tape label, etc...

I'd set up Amanda like this:

Backups every day

Tape cycle 20 tapes (tape001 - tape020). This gives some extra tapes
for amflush, delayed tape return from offsite, the "one file restore"
etc. If tapes wear out, add new tape numbers at the end (tape021 is
next) and "amrmtape" the old ones.

Send the 7 oldest tapes offsite once a week.
