If none of the other ideas posted gets you anywhere, there is a helper
program in the sources to track this problem:
cd common-src
make security
su amanda -c ./security
It will ask you for a remote user ("amanda" in your case) and a remote
host ("server" or whatever the error message has been saying) then it will
trace through the sequence of steps used to validate that access attempt.
Hopefully something in that output will point out what's wrong.
