Are you **absolutely** certain you did this on a fresh source tree? There wasn't an old config.cache accidentally laying around? You should have seen "checking for gtar ..." in the ./configure output. What did it say on that line (and maybe the next couple of lines)? BTW, I just tried this on my system and it "did the right thing". We just have to figure out what is different about your setup. >-mh. John R.
