I owe you an apology. The problem is this: After building on another machine, the source tree was re-tar'ed and scp'ed over. Hence, what I was thinking was "a fresh source tree" was anything but. Many thanks, I've run configure without a hitch this time, and gotten the desired results. Score one for the good guys!
